Content and Curriculum

  • We use a math resource called Math Expressions in grades K—6th.  We will continue to use this as a resource in our math instruction alongside having students work on deep, rich, real-world problems.  Math Expressions promotes a community of rigor and engagement for all students. Your student’s math homework comes directly from Math Expressions as well.
  • In 4th grade we will be learning place value and multi digit addition and subtraction, multiplication with whole numbers, division with whole numbers, equations with word problems, fraction concepts and operations, fractions and decimals, measurements and geometry.

  • The most important component in any child’s reading program is encouragement! Learning to read is a complicated process, and I have found that lots of encouragement and praise, for even the smallest steps, help tremendously with reading success.
  • Your child will have a guided reading group that will be individualized toward the skills and levels that are appropriate for him/her.  I use frequent assessment to measure your child’s progress and adjust these groups as needed.
  • I also do a variety of shared reading activities that gives your child opportunities to read with children of all ability levels.
  • Reading at home- Your student is encouraged to take home library books and reading group books to read at home each night. Your student’s account will get charged if these books are late/lost.  Your student is expected to participate in at least 30 minutes of reading each night.  This can include books that the 4th graders read, as well as any family read aloud books.
  • AR- We use a program called Accelerated Reader (AR) to track your student’s progress in reading.  Because it is also a great diagnostic tool, we encourage students to read books in which there is an AR quiz.  Most books have a quiz in AR and students will know how to check J  Students will set trimester goals to work toward which involve earning points for each book read and making sure they are reading books at their appropriate reading level.  Students can earn a ticket to a lunch provided by me if they meet their goals!  Please have your student show you how to check their progress toward their goal.  Your cooperation in helping students work toward meeting their goal by reading nightly will contribute greatly to their growth in reading this year!

Writing -

  • The students will have many opportunities to write every day.  We use journals, book studies, and lots of practice in order to help them to become proficient writers.

  • We will be specifically working on Personal Narrative (Slice of Life), Sequencing, Persuasive, Informative/Explanatory writing, and Summarizing, all of which should include the Figurative Language I will teach them in writing.

Science & Social Studies-

  • In 4th grade social studies our units include: Choices and opportunity costs, understanding regions, and Colorado history.
  • 4th grade science curriculum includes: Comparing and contrasting energy, components of the solar system, past and present living systems, characteristics of living things, and organisms and ecosystems.
